Who Are the Knights? The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1892 by Father Michael J. McGivney, for the purpose of providing Catholic men with an alternative to the Freemasons and other popular "secret societies" of the era. It gave them a chance to unite in their faith and provide financial security for their families during a time of economic hardship, disease, and widespread anti-Catholic sentiment. Today the Knights is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with over 1.7 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.
Membership Benefits? As a Knight, you and your family will be eligible to join one of America's top-ranked life insurance programs (top-ranked life insurance program) and apply for Catholic school scholarships and grants for your children. You will also receive a free subscription to the Columbia magazine, the world's largest Catholic family magazine. Of course, one of the most enjoyable benefits is the chance to meet other local Catholic families, make new friends, and participate in our council activities and fund-raisers. Our Council provides a great opportunity for all to embrace the three principals of the degrees of our Order; Charity, Unity and Fraternity. As a member, you can participate in the many fund raising events for our many charitable causes, gather in unity to pray against the horrors of abortion or for a sick and distressed member, and enjoy the company of fellow members while participating in the many family events during the year. When our Church needs help, we are there to serve. There are many youth oriented programs available to our members and others in the community.
How to Join? Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. You can simply contact any member of the Knights of Columbus and ask for a blank Application form. Contact either our Grand Knight (John Yochum (561) 252-7685) or the councils Membership Director (Pete Bishop (561) 795-0134) for an application and additional information.
The 4th Degree Any Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups (called "assemblies"). Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.
Ladies Auxiliary (Columbiettes) The Columbiettes are the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, working alongside the Knights to assist in promoting our charitable efforts, fund-raisers, and Church/community activities. In addition to assisting the Knights, they also run their own events and work closely with the needs of our parish.
